Why Should Plastic Surgery be Allowed and not Banned

There are people who think that the boom in plastic surgery is unhealthy to the point of being unethical. What does it say about people who believe that in order to be attractive or worthwhile they must have certain physical characteristics? Why do so many perfectly beautiful Asian women feel like they must have eyelids with a crease? Why do so many perfectly “normal” American women believe the need slimmer thighs and larger breasts?

There are certainly risks associated with any surgical procedure, and the operations are quite expensive. But most plastic surgery patients know quite a bit about the procedures they elect to have due to the proliferation of television shows and internet sites on the subject. For anybody contemplating plastic surgery, it is important to know that in the U.S., in order to be a plastic surgeon, a physician has to: attend at least three years of progressive clinical training in general surgery after receiving a medical degree; go through an accredited two to three year program in plastic surgery; and pass a comprehensive written and oral exam in plastic surgery.

When it comes to cosmetic procedures, however, doctors sometimes learn these through workshops or even videotapes. There is also the matter of “board certification.” The problem is, there are any number of “boards” the doctor can claim certification with, but the one that really means something is the certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, which is the only certifying board for plastic surgery recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Should adults be prevented from having plastic surgery? Like it or not, people do things they ought not all the time, and some people may consider plastic surgery as something people ought not do. Are they hurting anybody by doing it? The most likely person they’ll hurt is themselves if things do not go as planned.

There are those rare cases where people die while undergoing plastic surgery. Best selling novelist Olivia Goldsmith and Donde West, mother of hip-hop star Kanye West are two women who died having plastic surgery, and obviously other people - family and friends - were hurt by their choice. But you have to consider the risks that people take every day, like driving long distances to work, smoking cigarettes, or drinking too much alcohol. These risks are well known, and yet people make those choices all the time. Banning plastic surgery would be akin to banning anything that has similar risks, and there is as yet no outcry to do that.

Endoscopic Breast Augmentation

Endoscopic surgeries are minimally invasive procedures that involve a small camera and specially designed endoscopic instruments. The endoscope has proven to be an invaluable instrument for cosmetic plastic surgeons. Endoscopic surgeries are performed with a tiny lighted camera that is inserted into the surgical site through a tiny incision. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons the scars are smaller and less visible and the after effects of surgery are minimized to some extent. The less visible scars and quicker recovery times are a result of smaller incisions and less trauma to the body when compared to traditional plastic surgery methods. Endoscopic surgery is used in a variety of cosmetic surgical procedures. One of the most common of these procedures is breast augmentation.

Endoscopic Transaxillary Breast Augmentation

Endoscopic transaxillary breast augmentation has been available for over ten years, but not every cosmetic surgeon possesses the specialized training or instruments that are required. An incision is made in the natural folds of the underarm area and a channel is created up to the breast with the endoscopic instrument. The implant is inserted into the channel and guided through and positioned and centered behind the nipple.

Endoscopic Transumbilical Breast Augmentation

A TUBA or transumbilical breast augmentation refers to the incision being made on the edge of a fold in the belly button. An endoscope then creates a channel to the breast and the implant is inserted and moved up into the breast area and positioned and centered behind the nipple.

Advantages of Endoscopic Breast Augmentation

  • Shorter recovery time than traditional method
  • Bleeding, swelling and bruising are greatly reduced
  • Performed on an out-patient basis under local anesthetic

Each individual’s situation is unique and the endoscopic breast augmentation method may or may not be best for you. This can only be determined by your cosmetic surgeon after a thorough examination and consultation with you.

If you live in the Dallas, Fort Worth, Texas or surrounding area and you have questions concerning endoscopic breast augmentation, please visit the website of Dallas Fort-Worth-area cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Vasdev Rai, at the Cosmetic Surgical Center today and learn more about these procedures.

Breast Augmentation Incisions

The goal of most breast augmentation patients is to have the most natural-looking breasts with a minimal amount of scarring. Because scarring is such a hot topic in this type of cosmetic surgery, patients have several different breast incision options from which to choose in breast implant surgery.

Respectable cosmetic surgeons should always disclose full information to potential breast implant surgery patients regarding the pros and cons of the different incision options. These options include:

Inframammary Incisions

Inframammary incisions are made in the crease of the breast, where the breast meets the chest. This is a popular incision area because it allows the surgeon to have a great deal of control when placing the implant. It also allows the surgeon to do corrective procedures, if necessary, via the same incision area.

Scarring can be fairly well hidden in this type of incision.

Transaxillary Incisions

Transaxillary incisions are made in the folds of skin in the armpit and a path is created from the incision to the chest area. An endoscope is sometimes used to help guide the saline or silicone implant through the channel and into proper placement.

Scarring for this method is very well hidden. Most people will not associate a scar in this area with breast implants.

TUBA or Transumbilical Incisions

It may seem unbelievable, but breast implant incisions can actually be made in the navel (belly button). In the TUBA method, a pathway is created using an endoscope that runs from the navel incision, under the abdominal skin area, and up to the chest area. The surgeon can then insert an empty saline implant through the navel, through the tunnel and into proper place. Once the implant is in place, it can be filled with the saline solution to achieve the desired size. Silicone implants cannot be used with this method.

There is little to no visible scarring with the TUBA method. However, because the distance between the incision and the chest area is longer, this is a very complex method that requires a surgeon with extensive experience performing this procedure.

Periareolar Incisions

The periareolar method, also called a nipple incision, is actually not performed on the nipple but rather around the areola. The incision allows the surgeon to work directly at the implant location site, making this method a popular one.

Nipple incisions also tend to be a surgeon’s choice when performing a breast lift in conjunction with a breast enlargement because breast lifts are often performed with this type of incision.

The scarring can be virtually unnoticeable because the incision is created at the edge of the darker areola.

Not all patients will scar the same way after breast augmentation surgery. Likewise, there is no right or wrong answer when it comes to breast implant incision locations. This is a personal decision that must be carefully discussed with the patient and surgeon, taking into consideration a person’s lifestyle, skin tone, anatomy, size and type of implants and healing capacity.

When was Plastic Surgery First Invented?

As long ago as 2000 BC, surgeons in India were carrying out reconstructive techniques like skin grafts. It wasn’t until the late 18th century that western physicians traveled to India to learn about procedures like rhinoplasty. A surgeon named Joseph Constantine Carpue spend two decades in India learning plastic surgery methods. Carpue returned to the west and performed the first major plastic surgery in the western world in 1815.

The ancient Egyptians and Romans also carried out plastic surgery procedures. Romans were able to do such procedures as repairing ears that had been damaged from about the first century B.C.

While plastic surgery techniques evolved very slowly over the centuries, the horribly disfiguring wounds suffered by soldiers during World War I drove a need to develop techniques for reconstructive surgery. Sadly, World War II provided many more patients with disfiguring injuries such as severe burns. One of the most prominent practitioners at that time was Archibald McIndoe, who is also credited with performing the first male to female sex change operation.

In the 20th century in the United States, plastic surgery evolved far more rapidly. A surgeon from St. Louis named Vilray Blair used innovative techniques to treat World War I soldiers with complex facial injuries. His scientific paper, “Reconstructive Surgery of the Face” became the standard reference for facial reconstruction.

In the first half of the 20th century plastic surgery was generally considered a medically necessary set of procedures to reconstruct faces and sometimes other body parts of people who had been injured in accidents or fires, or who had had to undergo disfiguring surgery. By the second half of the 20th century, with the oldest baby boomers reaching adulthood, plastic surgery as a cosmetic pursuit began to gain traction.

Many young people - mostly young women - had rhinoplasty in attempts to have a more refined, feminine nose. The first breast implants came along in the 1960s, though they didn’t take off in popularity until the 1980s and 1990s. But noses and breasts weren’t all that were subject to surgical intervention. By the end of the 20th century, surgeons were regularly using techniques like liposuction, face lifts, and eye lifts. The pace has accelerated in the 21st century.

Plastic surgery is more common than ever these days, with the general increase in standard of living over the 20th century coupled with the massive baby boom generation aging and wanting to turn back the effects of time. The evolution and popularity of plastic surgery procedures show no signs of abating any time soon.

How Important Is Rhinoplasty In Today’s Society?

Rhinoplasty could seem like a bit of a modern day procedure, but in reality, the it has been carried out for many, many years. The first known use of the process occurred in India in about the year 500 BC. A person called Sushruta did the initial ones and is therefore known by many as ‘father of plastic surgery’. Rhinoplasty remained a procedure that happened mostly in India, until it came to western society via the British ruling establishment in terms of being featured in a publication called The Gentleman’s Magazine.

These days, rhinoplasty is carried out across the globe, and has become much more acceptable socially, than it perhaps once was. The modern day world is probably more obsessed than ever regarding how the human body and facial features look. With the introduction of various new technologies, it is not surprising to discover that people have made use of them in order to solve medical problems or make themselves more attractive.

Naturally, it isn’t just visual reasons that people choose rhinoplasty – it could be that a certain person has some sort of breathing issue as a result of a congenital nasal problem – which rhinoplasty might solve.

The term rhinoplasty might be better known as ‘nose reshaping’ or perhaps ‘nose job’. As it has entered colloquial language, which in itself shows just how much more acceptable and commonly sought the procedure really is.

People might opt to have the process carried out after a previous session that did not achieve the results that were required. In these situations a different surgeon might be selected, or perhaps the same one might do the procedure, and attempt to solve the problem.

Another reason for choosing rhinoplasty carried out is to take waway a ‘hump’ on the nose. Western society appears to liken the straight nose with attractiveness and therefore this is frequently one of the main reasons that people choose to pay for the procedure themselves. While people might perhaps think that these sort of humps are actually caused by bone, they are frequently a combination of bone and nasal cartilage.

It is normally the case that the lower section of the hump is based on cartilage, while the top half is supported by bone. Once the skin has been raised above this cartilage and bone area, the pieces of bone and cartilage that are thought unnecessary - are taken away.

Rhinoplasty procedures appears set to increase in the coming years, as people’s need to look attractive does not wane and pay continues to go up. While having such a procedure is expensive, in the minds of the person who wants it, it can perhaps increase their self esteem and indeed quality of life – reason enough, many might say. Rhinoplasty plays an important role in modern society.

Breast Augmentation Consultation by Dr. Sawan

The size and shape of a woman’s breasts can often play a critical role in a woman’s self esteem. Women who are discontented with their breast size can often feel self-conscious or even embarrassed about their appearance. Many years ago, when a woman was displeased with the shape of her breasts, there was very little she could do about it. However, thanks to medical science, nowadays they have an option called “Breast Augmentation Plastic Surgery.” Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgical procedure done to increase the size and enhance shape of a woman’s breasts by placing either a Gel (silicone) or saline filled implant under the breast.

There are a multitude of reasons why a woman would choose to undergo the discomfort and risks of cosmetic surgery of the breasts. These reasons can range from dissatisfaction with the overall shape and size of her breasts to the desire to correct a genetic deformity to wanting reconstruction after breast cancer treatment. Breast augmentation is the number one plastic surgery procedure performed in the United States today, with over half a million performed in 2008 alone.

Breast augmentation can be combined with procedures like reshaping, lifting (also called mastopexy) and correction of asymmetry. All of these can be done separately or can be combined. While the operation does require some recovery time as in the case of any other surgery, it is routinely done on several women of different backgrounds.

Dr. Sawan, a board certified plastic surgeon offers a variety of breast enhancement procedures that will give the breasts a more balanced, symmetrical look while still appearing natural and beautiful. Dr. Sawan performs these procedures in an accredited facility under general anesthesia. Anesthesia is provided by very knowledgeable and competent anesthesiologists. The procedure takes an hour and a half on an average. Expected recovery and return to work is approximately one week and sometime less.

Tummy Tuck Cosmetic Surgery

A tummy tuck cosmetic surgery procedure will take about two to five hours, depending on the nature of the job. If you are only receiving a partial abdominoplasty it will probably only take between one to two hours.

A complete abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) procedure is performed by creating a small incision from one hip to the next (just above the pubic area). After this, another cut is made to free the surrounding skin away from the navel. The skin is detached from the abdomen wall which will reveal the muscles. The skin is then reattached and a new hole for the navel is created and stitched into place.

Other people who often benefit from a tummy tuck are those who have lost a great deal of weight. Because of their great weight loss, they are usually left with great folds of hanging skin on their abdomen. This can be depressing for the person who has lost the weight; therefore a tummy tuck can be just the boost they need to ensure they don’t slip back into bad habits and regain their lost weight.

An abdominoplasty procedure, generally known as a tummy tuck, is a surgical process that allows the removal of the extra skin and fat from your abdomen. This surgery will lead to tighter collection of muscles in the abdominal wall thus giving you a flatter stomach.

Tummy tuck treatment varies depending on your conditions and requirements. Some people go for both abdominiplasty treatment and liposuction because they have that need. Others go for one or the other only.

Men and women who have lost large amounts of weight by any means, including those who have dieted or have lost it through “Gastric Bypass” — also known as “Stomach Stapling” or “Bariatric Surgery” — are often left with folds of skin that hang like an apron. This is not only demoralizing for those who have gone to the effort of achieving a significant weight loss, but it also makes personal hygiene, exercising and wearing normal clothes difficult.

Anesthesia. For most mini tummy tucks, plastic surgeons use local anesthesia. This means that you are semi-conscious during the operation. This brings the cost of anesthesia way down. Anesthesia that puts you totally out during the operation is more expensive.

Many times when receiving a quote they will only inform you of the surgeons fees without telling you that is all they are actually quoting you. when in reality the surgeon’s fee is roughly only 60-80% of the cost for the entire procedure. This is to get you to make an appointment to see the doctor which is when they will tell you the true total cost.

Tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is a major surgical procedure which needs the direct monitoring of doctors even after the procedure. The actual operation involves the removal of excess fats from the abdomen tissues and muscles. After the removal of fat through liposuction, the excess sagging skin which makes up the flabby stomach can now be removed.

Tummy tuck, medically known as abdominoplasty, is a major surgical procedure which involves the removal of excess fats around the abdomen tissue and muscle area. After the removal of fats through liposuction, the “tucking in” or the removal of flabby and sagging skin follow next. Abdominoplasty is a major operation so extra and professional care and advice must be taken before, during, and after the procedure.

How Can I Get Money for Plastic Surgery?

Financing plastic surgery is not like financing a car or a home. A loan to pay for plastic surgery is an unsecured debt, meaning there’s not collateral for the bank to repossess in the event of a default. Banks, as you may have guessed, are very careful about who they loan plastic surgery money to. They will very carefully consider your credit history, including late payments, defaults, your bill payment history, and how long you’ve had credit accounts.

Some companies that lend money to finance plastic surgery make a determination based on credit score alone, a number which can range from 365 to 870, with a higher score being better. Your credit score will likely have to be above 700 to avail yourself to this kind of plastic surgery financing.

If you choose to have plastic surgery, you will pay the surgeon’s fee, operating room cost, anesthesia, and a device fee if your surgery involves an implant of some sort. It is important to consider all the costs before committing to having plastic surgery. In 2006, surgeon’s fees averaged around $3,000, but that average represents a range that takes in the relatively small average fee of $175 for microdermabrasion and the relatively large average fee of around $4,800 for a face lift.

You do not have to borrow the entire cost of your plastic surgery. Many plastic surgery financing companies will make loans ranging from a low of around $2,000 up to $20,000. It will depend on your credit history. In many cases, the smaller the loan you ask for, the more likely you are to be successful. Some prospective patients will take out a loan for part of the costs and pay for the rest of it with cash or a credit card.

A company called CareCredit issues a credit card that allows patients to finance health care costs (including costs for elective cosmetic surgery) with a network of over 100,000 doctors in the U.S. Once you have the CareCredit card, you and your doctor work out a payment plan. CareCredit is only for paying for medical services, and it is possible to get no interest financing in many cases, though not all doctors offer this type of payment plan.

While the best way to pay for plastic surgery is to save up for it, not everyone is so patient or disciplined. Fortunately, there are finance companies that will make loans to people seeking cosmetic surgery and even credit cards designed to help people pay the high costs associated with plastic surgery.
